What is Maha-Samadhi?
The theory of Samadhi has been widely misunderstood. Many people misinterpret Samadhi as a death-like state. The term Samadhi is derived from the Sanskrit phrases Sama and dhi, where Sama refers to serenity and Dhi refers to buddhi or intellect. Samadhi is the condition of consciousness in which you achieve equanimity. Everything merges into the one wholeness known as reality. This situation permits you to experience the unity of everything that is, the oneness of existence.
Samadhi is a state of calm in which the mind exceeds its
usual role of judgement. This, in turn, separates one from one's actual body.
There is a difference between who you are and who you are in your body (A space
between what is you and your body is created.).
There is no time or space in this condition. Your mind
creates time and space. Time and space cease to exist for you when you
transcend the mind as a limitation. What is here is turned into what is there,
and what is now is transformed into what is then. You don't have a history or a
future. Right now, everything is precisely where it should be. You might think
someone has been in Samadhi for three days, but it was only a few seconds for
them - it just passes off like that. They have transcended the duality of what
is and isn't. They've crossed the line and tasted what isn't — what has no
form, shape, characteristics, or qualities – nothing.
The entire existence, the many forms of creation, exist only
as long as the mind is present. When you dissolve your thoughts,
everything merges into one.
The union of the individual, with the Universal
Absolute.
In simple words Maha-Samadhi is the condition of attaining
bliss and oneness, as well as the point at which the "revolving wheel of
thoughts" comes to a halt. The first line of the yoga sutras, "Chitta
Vritti Nirodha," implies "the halting, or aggregation of, the
spinning wheel of thoughts.".
Maha-Samadhi, the "great" and last Samadhi in
Hinduism and Buddhism, is the act of abandoning one's body consciously and
purposely at the time of death. Maha-Samadhiis quite real and possible in our
time as well. Maha-Samadhiis willingly facing death and doing nothing but
wishing for it to happen.
