Architecture of a temple
Source:Wikipedia

The main form of Hindu architecture has many styles, but the basic nature of the Hindu mandir or temple remains the same, with the essential feature of an inner sanctum, the garbha griha or womb-chamber, where the primary Murti or image of a deity is housed in a simple bare cell. This chamber most often has an open area designed for clockwise movement for rituals and prayers. The garbhagriha is crowned on the outside by a tower-like shikhara, also known as the vimana in the south. A circumambulatory passage for parikrama, a mandapa congregation hall, and sometimes an antarala antechamber and porch between garbhagriha and mandapa are included in the shrine building.

Hindu temples architecture reflects a synthesis of arts, dharmic ideals, beliefs, values, and the Hindu way of life. Tirtha (pilgrimage) takes place at the temple. A Hindu temple contains all of the cosmic elements that create and celebrate life in the Hindu pantheon, from fire to water, images of nature to deities, the feminine to the masculine, kama to artha, the fleeting sounds and incense smells to Purusha—the eternal nothingness yet universality.

Man and the Divine

The form and meanings of architectural elements in a Hindu temple are intended to function as a link between man and the divine, assisting his progress to spiritual knowledge and truth, and his liberation, which is referred to as moksha.

Shilpa Shastras and Vastu Sastras describe the architectural principles of Hindu temples in India. The Hindu culture has encouraged aesthetic independence in its temple builders, and its architects have sometimes exercised considerable flexibility in creative expression by adopting other perfect geometries and mathematical principles in Mandir construction to express the Hindu way of life.

Is Maha-Samadhi a Path to Peace or Death?

What is Maha-Samadhi?

The theory of Samadhi has been widely misunderstood.  Many people misinterpret Samadhi as a death-like state. The term Samadhi is derived from the Sanskrit phrases Sama and dhi, where Sama refers to serenity and Dhi refers to buddhi or intellect. Samadhi is the condition of consciousness in which you achieve equanimity. Everything merges into the one wholeness known as reality. This situation permits you to experience the unity of everything that is, the oneness of existence.

Samadhi is a state of calm in which the mind exceeds its usual role of judgement. This, in turn, separates one from one's actual body. There is a difference between who you are and who you are in your body (A space between what is you and your body is created.).

There is no time or space in this condition. Your mind creates time and space. Time and space cease to exist for you when you transcend the mind as a limitation. What is here is turned into what is there, and what is now is transformed into what is then. You don't have a history or a future. Right now, everything is precisely where it should be. You might think someone has been in Samadhi for three days, but it was only a few seconds for them - it just passes off like that. They have transcended the duality of what is and isn't. They've crossed the line and tasted what isn't — what has no form, shape, characteristics, or qualities – nothing.

The entire existence, the many forms of creation, exist only as long as the mind is present. When you dissolve your thoughts, everything merges into one.

The union of the individual, with the Universal Absolute.

In simple words Maha-Samadhi is the condition of attaining bliss and oneness, as well as the point at which the "revolving wheel of thoughts" comes to a halt. The first line of the yoga sutras, "Chitta Vritti Nirodha," implies "the halting, or aggregation of, the spinning wheel of thoughts.".

Maha-Samadhi, the "great" and last Samadhi in Hinduism and Buddhism, is the act of abandoning one's body consciously and purposely at the time of death. Maha-Samadhiis quite real and possible in our time as well. Maha-Samadhiis willingly facing death and doing nothing but wishing for it to happen.

What is the purpose of samadhi? What is Samadhi state?

What is Samadhi after death?

Unbelievable Facts about Jagannath Temple

Amazing Jagannath Temple

Source: Photo by Prabhala Raghuvir from Pexels
The Hindu soul breathes through history and culture. That is what defines our society, and kindly share after reading these impressive truths.

Source: Wikipedia Commons

The massive walls of the famous Puri's Jagannath Temple in Odisha required three generations of time and work to brick up. As one of the Char-Dham Pilgrimages, the shrine is extremely important to Hindu followers. It also acts as a massive historical edifice that was created in the year 1078, millennia ago. Thousands of people travel to Odisha each year to seek Lord Jagannath's blessings.

The temple is notable for its annual Rath (Charriot) Yatra, which attracts millions of people to see the deities being carried by three huge chariots. The English word Juggernaut shares its origin from this annual parade. But that isn't the only thing the town is known for! Some mysterious events with no scientific explanations have piqued the interest of travellers all around the world. Here are a few of the most mind-blowing facts:

Source: Flickr

It's common sense to understand that the wind directs the route of any piece of cloth. But it looks like the flag mounted on the top of the Jagannath Temple is a unique exception to the principle. This particular flag flies in the opposite direction of the wind's direction, despite the lack of scientific evidence to support it. In short, we can say nature's rules are being disobeyed.

Source: Reddit

The Ascent: Every day, a priest scrambles the temple walls, which are taller than a 45-story structure, in order to replace the flag above the temple dome. This rite dates back to the construction of the temple. Without any protective equipment, the procedure is followed with bare hands. The temple is said to be shut down for 18 years if the rite is skipped one day from the calendar.

Is it a work of art or a message from Lord Jagannath? A necessary detail while sketching anything is shading. Shading happens when sunlight glows one part of the subject leaving a shadow on the other, which ultimately triggers shade. But, what if something has no shadow? The temple is reported to have no shadow at all, at any time of the day from any directions possible. Could it be an architectural marvel or the Lord Jagannath's message to humanity?

Source: Flickr

Sudarshan Chakra's Strange Mysteries: The Sudarshan Chakra, which sits atop the temple's pinnacle, has two secrets.

The first anomaly is the theory of how a tonne of hard metal got up there without the use of any machinery, relying solely on the strength of the human race at the time.

The second is one that deals with the Chakra's architectural technique.

Every way you look, the Chakra returns the same expression. It's as if it was purposefully built to look the same from every angle.

No birds fly above the shrine: The sky is the province of the birds. We frequently observe birds sitting, resting, or flying above our heads and rooftops. To date, there had been no sightings of birds or planes flying above the temple dome.

Food is never in short supply: Food waste is considered a bad sign in Hinduism, and even the Temple workforce follows this rule. The daily attendance at the temple fluctuates between 2,000 to 20,000 devotees., the Parsadam prepared every day is never wasted, not even a bit. Is this the result of good management or the Lord's will?

Silent water: The audibility of the crashing waves is completely lost seconds after you take the first step inside the temple from the Singha Dwara gate. This occurrence is especially noticeable in the evening. This fact, yet again, defies scientific explanation. The sound returns when you exit the shrine.

The Breeze's reverse gear: Take any location on Earth; during the day, a breeze from the sea reaches the land, and in the evening, the opposite occurs. The breeze in Puri, on the other hand, has a habit of going in the opposite direction. The breeze blows from land to sea during the day and the opposite in the evening.

Cooking Techniques That Work Like Magic: The priests here keep the ancient process of making Parsadam alive. Seven pots are used as vessels, which are piled on top of one another and cooked using firewood.. Surprisingly, the topmost pot is cooked first, followed by the others in the same order!

Source: Flickr

Disintegration of Deities: Every 14 to 18 years, the deities are buried one on top of the other, to be replaced by new ones. These deities are believed to be created of neem wood and dissolve on their own.

Source: Wikipedia Commons

The Chariot Procession: The Rath Yatra is an annual procession in which two sets of chariots carry the deities outside the temple (3 each). The goddesses are carried in the first chariot till they reach the river that separates the Jagannath Temple and the Mausi Maa Temple.

Shiva Tandavam Stotram

It is important to chant this stotram properly. Many of us chant this mantra without understanding its essence. You must first listen to Shiva Tandava Stotram until you comprehend the pronunciation.

After you've finished listening, keep practicing by playing it again and again, it will help you learn and remember the stotram quickly.

Once familiar with the stotram try to learn and understand the meaning.

Ravana, the Asura (demon) king of Lanka (also known as Lankeshwar), authored the Shiva Tandava Stotram spontaneously ages ago. He was an illustrious scholar endowed with intelligence and a devout follower of Lord Shiva. This stotram was sung in praise of the Lord, pleading for moksha.

The Shiva Tandava Stotram depicts Lord Shiva's cosmic dance, which purges all evil energy. The hymn is composed of 15 verses, each of which emphasizes Shiva's fierce personality and timeless beauty in great detail. The verses (lyrics) and their meaning can be found towards the end.

Shiva is addressed as Bholenath, it means one who is innocent and easy to please.

According to tradition, anyone who praised Lord Shiva or conducted penance with faith and dedication received a boon. All the demons took advantage of this and worshipped Lord Shiva, knowing that pleasing him and receiving a boon was easy.

Ravana, who was a great priest, administrator, warrior, and devotee of Lord Shiva, he was known as the king of demons.  He adored himself and his abilities.

The narrative of Shiva Tandava Stotram begins on the day Ravana attempted to lift the Kailash mountain in his hand to carry Lord Shiva to Sri Lanka with him. As a punishment, Lord Shiva pushed his toe, crushing Ravana's fingers in the process. Ravana screamed out in agony. To escape from the wrath of Lord Shiva, Ravana sang a hymn that came to be known as the popular Shiva Tandava Stotram.

Lord Shiva was engrossed in the music of Ravana and became immensely pleased. When Lord Shiva told Ravana to ask for a boon, Ravana requested that the Lord confer him with the most powerful tool and thus, became indestructible.

Chanting Shiva Tandava Stotram has a plethora of advantages. The Shiva Tandava Stotram, when chanted or listened to, bestows enormous power, beauty, and mental strength. It is stated that chanting the stotram clears the atmosphere of all negative forces and makes it auspicious.

The Shiva Tandava Stotram has no set time and can be recited by anyone at any time. There are, however, some unique advantages to reciting it at these times:

During eclipse: It is stated that chanting Om Namah Shivaya or Shiva Tandava Stotram during an eclipse lessens all of the planets' negative effects. Chanting, meditating, or praying during the eclipse is a hundred times more beneficial than at other times.

During Brahma Muhurta (Brahma means knowledge and muhurta means period): It is considered that whatever activity one conducts during Brahma Muhurta would be beneficial. Brahma Muhurta is the best time to perceive knowledge, and it has a significant impact. It reduces the amount of energy consumed and doubles productivity.

Pradosh Vrat: Pradosh Kaal is the time of the month that falls on the 13th day and is also known as Trayodashi tithi. This tithi falls fortnightly. It is said that chanting Shiva Tandava Stotram on every Trayodashi tithi helps burn sins.

Note Pradosh Kaal varies according to different locations.

With his neck consecrated by the flow of water that flows from his hair,
And on his neck a snake, which is hung like a garland,
And the Damaru drum that emits the sound “Damat Damat Damat Damat”,
Lord Shiva did the auspicious dance of Tandava. May he give prosperity to all of us.

I have a deep interest in Shiva
Whose head is glorified by the rows of moving waves of the celestial Ganga river,
Which stir in the deep well of his hair in tangled locks.
Who has the brilliant fire burning on the surface of his forehead,
And who has the crescent moon as a jewel on his head.

May my mind seek happiness in Lord Shiva,
In whose mind all the living beings of the glorious universe exist,
Who is the companion of Parvati (daughter of the mountain king),
Who controls unsurpassed adversity with his compassionate gaze, Which is all-pervading
And who wears the Heavens as his raiment.

May I find wonderful pleasure in Lord Shiva, who is the advocate of all life,
With his creeping snake with its reddish brown hood and the shine of its gem on it
Spreading variegated colors on the beautiful faces of the Goddesses of the Directions,
Which is covered by a shimmering shawl made from the skin of a huge, inebriated elephant.

May Lord Shiva give us prosperity,
Who has the Moon as a crown,

Whose footrest is darkened by the flow of dust from flowers
Which fall from the heads of all the gods – Indra, Vishnu and others.

May we obtain the riches of the Siddhis from the tangled strands Shiva’s hair,
Who devoured the God of Love with the sparks of the fire that burns on his forehead,
Which is revered by all the heavenly leaders,
Which is beautiful with a crescent moon.

My interest is in Lord Shiva, who has three eyes,
Who offered the powerful God of Love to fire.
The terrible surface of his forehead burns with the sound “Dhagad, Dhagad …”
He is the only artist expert in tracing decorative lines
on the tips of the breasts of Parvati, the daughter of the mountain king.

May Lord Shiva give us prosperity,
The one who bears the weight of this universe,
Who is enchanting with the moon,
Who has the celestial river Ganga
Whose neck is dark as midnight on a new moon night, covered in layers of clouds.

Praphulla nila pankaja prapajnchakalimchatha
Vdambi kanthakandali raruchi prabaddhakandharam
Smarachchidam purachchhidam bhavachchidam makhachchidam
Gajachchidandhakachidam tamamtakachchidam bhaje ||9||

I pray to Lord Shiva, whose neck is bound with the brightness of the temples
hanging with the glory of fully bloomed blue lotus flowers,
Which look like the blackness of the universe.
Who is the slayer of Manmatha, who destroyed the Tripura,
Who destroyed the bonds of worldly life, who destroyed the sacrifice,
Who destroyed the demon Andhaka, who is the destroyer of the elephants,
And who has overwhelmed the God of death, Yama.

Akharvagarvasarvamangala kalakadambamajnjari
Rasapravaha madhuri vijrumbhana madhuvratam
Smarantakam purantakam bhavantakam makhantakam
Gajantakandhakantakam tamantakantakam bhaje ||10||

I pray to Lord Siva, who has bees flying all around because of the sweet
Scent of honey coming from the beautiful bouquet of auspicious Kadamba flowers,
Who is the slayer of Manmatha, who destroyed the Tripura,
Who destroyed the bonds of worldly life, who destroyed the sacrifice,
Who destroyed the demon Andhaka, who is the destroyer of the elephants,
And who has overwhelmed the God of death, Yama.

Jayatvadabhravibhrama bhramadbhujangamasafur
Dhigdhigdhi nirgamatkarala bhaal havyavat
Dhimiddhimiddhimidhva nanmrudangatungamangala
Dhvanikramapravartita prachanda tandavah shivah ||11||

Shiva, whose dance of Tandava is in tune with the series of loud
sounds of drum making the sound “Dhimid Dhimid”,
Who has fire on his great forehead, the fire that is spreading out because of the
breath of the snake, wandering in whirling motions in the glorious sky.

When will I be able to worship Lord Sadashiva, the eternally auspicious God,
With equanimous vision towards people or emperors,
Towards a blade of grass and a lotus, towards friends and enemies,
Towards the most precious gem and a lump of dirt,
Toward a snake or a garland and towards the varied forms of the world?

Kada nilimpanirjhari nikujnjakotare vasanh
Vimuktadurmatih sada shirah sthamajnjalim vahanh
Vimuktalolalochano lalamabhalalagnakah
Shiveti mantramuchcharan sada sukhi bhavamyaham ||13||

When I can be happy, living in a cave near the celestial river Ganga,
Bringing my hands clasped on my head all the time,
With my impure thoughts washed away, uttering the mantra of Shiva,
Devoted to the God with a glorious forehead and with vibrant eyes?

Imam hi nityameva muktamuttamottamam stavam
Pathansmaran bruvannaro vishuddhimeti santatam
Hare gurau subhaktimashu yati nanyatha gatim
Vimohanam hi dehinam sushankarasya chintanam ||14||

Anyone who reads, remembers and recites this stotra as stated here
Is purified forever and obtains devotion in the great Guru Shiva.
For this devotion, there is no other way or refuge.
Just the mere thought of Shiva removes the delusion.

Puja vasanasamaye dashavaktragitam
Yah shambhupujanaparam pathati pradoshhe
Tasya sthiram rathagajendraturangayuktam
Lakshmim sadaiva sumukhim pradadati shambhuh ||15||

To him who is Steadfast in this Worship; will come Chariots Yoked with King of Elephants and Horses (signifying Prosperity) and Devi Lakshmi will Always show Her Graceful Face to him. Sri Shambhu will Bestow this Boon.
